Social Media
What age should your children be when they get their own phone (and then would have their own social media accounts)?
When they are mature enough.
As a parent, you will not be able to keep up with all the new trends, but your goal is to foster TRUST with your children. Be consistent and help them believe that you have their best interest in mind. Kids who trust their parents are less likely to hide things.
Social media is designed to be addictive. It is created to be inescapable for adults and children.
Of course, there are some positives - Educational entertainment, connecting friends, social movements, groups connecting people with similar interests or health issues, etc.
Be alert of the dangers of unchecked social media. The algorithms are made to repeat use. Engagement is driven more by propagating hateful content than positive content. There is also the serious concern of online bullying.
Have a conversation to set up a system so that your children are aware you will constantly be checking them. Set up for consequences if they past the boundaries. Talk about the reasons they may go past the limit without getting upset at them and figure how to support them.
